Tromso’s compact city center is the northernmost city center of any significant size in Europe, with colorful wooden houses, the Polaria aquarium, and the waterfront. Free to walk. The Polar Museum (paid, cheap) documents Arctic exploration. Budget travelers walk the center, cross the Tromso Bridge for a view of the city and the surrounding mountains, and in winter have a chance to see the Northern Lights from within the city limits.
