Street in Sibiu

Sibiu Old Town

Sibiu is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Romania, a Saxon settlement in Transylvania with colorful gabled houses, three interconnected squares (Piata Mare, Piata Mica, Piata Huet), and iconic “eye” dormers on the rooftops that make the houses look like they are watching you. Free to walk. Budget travelers take the cheap train from Bucharest or Cluj-Napoca and discover a town that was European Capital of Culture in 2007 and still feels like the most beautiful city in Romania.
