Piazza della Repubblica is a large square in the center of Florence, built in the 19th century on the site of the old Roman forum and the medieval Jewish ghetto. Free. The grand arcade, the triumphal arch, and the historic cafes (Caffe Giubbe Rosse, where Futurists gathered) line the edges. The square is a regular stop on walking tours because it connects the Duomo area to the Ponte Vecchio route. Budget travelers pass through it multiple times and use its central location as a reference point.
