The inverted-table silhouette of Bratislava Castle on its hill above the Danube is the city's defining image, and the views from the terrace across the river to the Austrian bank explain why it was built there: whoever controlled this hill controlled movement between Central Europe and the Hungarian plain.
Bratislava's Stare Mesto (old town) is compact enough to walk from one edge to the other in under 30 minutes, which sounds like a limitation but works in practice: it concentrates the best of the city into a walkable zone between the castle hill and the Danube.
The Danube Promenade stretches along the river south of the old town, with views of the UFO Bridge, the castle, and the river traffic. Free.
Devin Castle sits where the Morava River meets the Danube, at the point where Slovakia touches Austria, and Napoleon's army blew up most of what was not already ruins in 1809. The site has been fortified since Celtic times, with Roman, Great Moravian, Hungarian, and Habsburg layers underneath what survives.
Michael's Gate is the only surviving gate of Bratislava's medieval city fortifications, a 14th century tower that has been standing at the edge of the Old Town for over 600 years while the walls around it were gradually demolished.
A neo-Renaissance theater building at the end of Hviezdoslavovo Square, with a fountain and promenade stretching out in front. Free to admire from outside, and performance tickets are remarkably affordable.
