Devin Castle is a ruined clifftop fortress at the confluence of the Danube and Morava rivers, 10 kilometers west of Bratislava on the Austrian border. Entry to the castle is a small fee. The ruins sit above a dramatic river junction with views into Austria across the water. Budget travelers take the cheap bus from the center and spend a half day at a castle that marks where Central Europe meets Western Europe.

The inverted-table silhouette of Bratislava Castle on its hill above the Danube is the city's defining image, and the views from the terrace across the river to the Austrian bank explain why it was built there: whoever controlled this hill controlled movement between Central Europe and the Hungarian plain.
Bratislava's Stare Mesto (old town) is compact enough to walk from one edge to the other in under 30 minutes, which sounds like a limitation but works in practice: it concentrates the best of the city into a walkable zone between the castle hill and the Danube.
