Bratislava is a full capital where the headline sights cost nothing, and everything else costs a fraction of what you would pay across the border in Vienna, an hour away by direct train. The compact old town is free to wander on foot: Michael’s Gate, the city’s last surviving medieval gate, is free to photograph from the street, with a Kilometre Zero marker at its base showing distances to world capitals. The grounds around the hilltop Bratislava Castle are open without a ticket and deliver panoramic Danube views, and St. Martin’s Cathedral, the Habsburg coronation church, the Danube promenade, and the Slavin war memorial above the city add up to a full day at zero admission. A self-guided wander plus a grocery-store lunch keeps a day here in single-euro territory, and food and drink stay cheap year-round. Spring and autumn are the sweet spot for walking the old town and the riverfront before summer crowds and prices climb, and Bratislava pairs naturally with Vienna or a longer Danube loop toward Budapest.

The inverted-table silhouette of Bratislava Castle on its hill above the Danube is the city's defining image, and the views from the terrace across the river to the Austrian bank explain why it was built there: whoever controlled this hill controlled movement between Central Europe and the Hungarian plain.
Bratislava's Stare Mesto (old town) is compact enough to walk from one edge to the other in under 30 minutes, which sounds like a limitation but works in practice: it concentrates the best of the city into a walkable zone between the castle hill and the Danube.
The Danube Promenade stretches along the river south of the old town, with views of the UFO Bridge, the castle, and the river traffic. Free.
Devin Castle sits where the Morava River meets the Danube, at the point where Slovakia touches Austria, and Napoleon's army blew up most of what was not already ruins in 1809. The site has been fortified since Celtic times, with Roman, Great Moravian, Hungarian, and Habsburg layers underneath what survives.

Michael's Gate is the only surviving gate of Bratislava's medieval city fortifications, a 14th century tower that has been standing at the edge of the Old Town for over 600 years while the walls around it were gradually demolished.
