The Black Church (Biserica Neagra) is the largest Gothic church between Vienna and Istanbul, named for the soot stains left by the great fire of 1689. Entry is paid at a modest price.

Bran Castle
Bran Castle is marketed as “Dracula’s Castle,” though Vlad the Impaler’s connection to it is tenuous at best. Entry is paid. The castle itself is a well-preserved medieval fortress on a rocky cliff. The Dracula connection draws the crowds, but the castle is worth visiting for its architecture, the views from the towers, and the surrounding market selling crafts and cheese. Budget travelers take the cheap bus from Brasov (30 minutes) and judge for themselves whether it is a tourist trap or a genuine medieval experience.

Brasov Old Town
Brasov's Old Town is a compact Saxon settlement ringed by medieval walls beneath the Tampa Mountain, with the Council Square (Piata Sfatului), the Black Church (largest Gothic church between Vienna and Istanbul), and narrow lanes of colored merchant houses. Free to walk.
Tampa Mountain
Tampa Mountain rises directly behind Brasov's old town to 960 meters, with a cable car (paid) and a hiking trail (free, about 45 minutes). The "BRASOV" sign (Hollywood-style) is visible from the town below.
