Church in Brasov

Black Church

The Black Church (Biserica Neagra) is the largest Gothic church between Vienna and Istanbul, named for the soot stains left by the great fire of 1689. Entry is paid at a modest price. The interior holds one of the largest collections of Anatolian rugs in Europe (donated by Saxon merchants over centuries) and a 4,000-pipe organ. Budget travelers pay the small ticket and see a church that tells the story of Transylvania’s Saxon Germans in its architecture, its fires, and its carpets.
