Alfama is the oldest neighborhood in Lisbon, a steep maze of narrow alleys, tiled facades, fado bars, and miradouros with views over the river. Wandering is free and the whole point. There is no single attraction here. The neighborhood itself is the experience. Budget travelers get lost on purpose, follow the sound of fado music drifting from open doors, and stop at whichever viewpoint appears next.

The Hi Lisbon Baixa and Chiado Free Tour starts at Praca do Comercio and walks through Lisbon's downtown grid, the Chiado literary quarter, and the edges of the Alfama. Groups are limited to 20 guests, with daily departures at 11:30 and 15:30.
The Lisbon Seven Hills Viewpoint Route is a self-guided walking route connecting the city's most famous miradouros across its hills. Free. A full morning activity from Praca do Comercio to the hilltops with cheap coffee at kiosk cafes at each viewpoint along the way.

The 25 de Abril Bridge is Lisbon's Golden Gate-like suspension bridge spanning the Tagus estuary. Free to see from numerous viewpoints.
Avenida da Liberdade is Lisbon's grand tree-lined boulevard stretching from Restauradores to the Marquis of Pombal roundabout. Free to walk, the wide mosaic sidewalks and shaded central promenade make it one of the city's most pleasant strolls, connecting the Baixa to Parque Eduardo VII.
Bairro Alto is Lisbon's bohemian hilltop neighborhood, a grid of narrow streets that is quiet by day and the center of the city's nightlife after dark. Free to wander.
Belem Tower is a UNESCO-listed Manueline watchtower standing at the edge of the Tagus, built in the early 16th century to guard the entrance to Lisbon's harbor. Entry is a modest fee.
The Carmo Convent is a roofless Gothic ruin left open to the sky since the 1755 earthquake. The skeletal arches standing against the Lisbon sky make it one of the most atmospheric historic sites in the city.
