Torun is one of those rare cities where the headline sight costs nothing: the entire UNESCO old town survived the war intact, so the medieval core is yours to wander on foot for free. Start at the vast market square, one of the largest in medieval Europe, where the Copernicus monument and the Gothic town hall sit out in the open at no charge, then drift down to the leaning tower, which you can walk right up to without a ticket. Follow the Philadelphia Boulevard along the Vistula for free views of the brick walls, the bridges, and the cathedral skyline, and pick up a packet of Torun gingerbread for a cheap, genuinely local snack. It slots in as a single full day or a budget overnight between Warsaw and Gdansk, and nearby Bydgoszcz is a short, low-cost regional train hop if you want to stretch the trip. Come in late spring or September for mild weather and lower room rates than the July and August peak.
