Torun Old Town
Torun is a UNESCO-listed medieval trading city on the Vistula River, the birthplace of Copernicus and famous for its gingerbread. Free to walk. The old town has brick Gothic architecture, the House of Copernicus (paid, modest), and the Town Hall tower (paid, views). The gingerbread shops sell ornate hand-decorated gingerbread for a couple of euros. Budget travelers take the cheap train from Warsaw or Gdansk, walk the old town, buy gingerbread, and see the house where Copernicus was born.
