Banska Stiavnica is the rare UNESCO World Heritage town where the main attraction, wandering a caldera slope packed with Renaissance and Baroque mining houses, costs nothing. The real budget win is the “tajchy”, the 18th-century artificial reservoirs that once powered the silver mines and now double as free swimming spots, with Klinger just a short uphill walk from the center. It sits far enough off the main routes (around 170 kilometers from Bratislava) that it stays quiet and cheap, a worthwhile detour for anyone exploring Slovakia slowly. Come for the silver-mining history, stay because your wallet barely notices.
