Oxford’s “dreaming spires” and ancient college quads make for one of England’s most beautiful free walks, and wandering the streets, the covered market, and the riverside meadows costs nothing. Some colleges charge a small entry fee, but the views from the street and the open green spaces are free, so a rich day here can stay cheap. It compares well with fellow university city Cambridge, and frequent buses make it an easy, low-cost day trip from London.

Christ Church College
Christ Church is the largest and most famous Oxford college, with a cathedral (the smallest in England), a Great Hall that inspired the Harry Potter dining hall, and the Tom Tower entrance. Entry is paid.
Radcliffe Camera
The Radcliffe Camera is a circular domed library building in Radcliffe Square, the most photographed building in Oxford. Free to admire from outside (the interior is a university reading room, not open to visitors).
