Jajce is a small medieval town built around a waterfall that plunges right through the city center, free to view and unforgettable. Climbing up to the hilltop fortress and wandering the old stone lanes costs nothing, and the town makes a cheap, quiet stop between Sarajevo and Banja Luka. Bosnia is one of the most affordable corners of Europe, so meals and beds here stay easy on a budget. Late spring and early autumn give you fuller waterfall flow without the peak-summer day-trippers.

Jajce Fortress
The hilltop fortress of the last Bosnian king, with crenellated walls and sweeping views over the Vrbas valley. A small entry fee applies and the climb through the old town is part of the experience.
Jajce Waterfall
A 17-metre waterfall in the town centre where the Pliva river drops into the Vrbas, one of the few urban waterfalls in Europe. Free to view from several angles around the confluence.
Pliva Lakes
Two emerald lakes above the town with a cluster of tiny wooden watermills on the connecting stream. Free to visit and among the most photographed scenes in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
