Győr is one of those rare stops where the best of the city is free: the pedestrianised baroque old town and Széchenyi Square cost nothing to wander, and the riverbanks where the Danube, Rába, and Rábca meet make for an easy no-spend afternoon. Sitting almost exactly halfway on the Vienna to Budapest corridor, it works as a cheap detour rather than a separate trip, and trains reach it from either capital in under 90 minutes, so a day visit needs no overnight budget. Climb the castle hill to the cathedral, where a small donation gets you in front of the Herm of Saint László, and walk south on a budget bus to Pannonhalma Archabbey, a UNESCO Benedictine monastery about 20 km away. Anchor the longer trip in Budapest or Vienna, visit in spring or autumn shoulder season for thinner crowds and lower room rates, and you can see the densest baroque core in Hungary for the price of the rail ticket.
