Eger is a charming baroque town in northern Hungary famous for its hilltop castle, thermal baths, and the Valley of the Beautiful Women, where cellar after cellar pours local wine for next to nothing. The old town is free to wander, the castle grounds give wide views, and tap-water-cheap wine tasting makes it one of Europe’s best value detours. It is an easy, inexpensive train ride from Budapest for a day trip or an overnight.

Eger's main square is framed by the Baroque Minorite Church and the castle hill, with a statue of Captain Dobó at its center. Free to enjoy, the square is the natural meeting point and leads directly into the pedestrian streets lined with Egri Bikavér wine bars.
Eger Castle is a hilltop fortress famous for the 1552 siege where a small Hungarian garrison held off the Ottoman army. Entry is paid at a modest price.
The northernmost Ottoman minaret in Europe stands 40 meters tall in a residential street, a surprising remnant of 91 years of Turkish rule. A small fee lets you climb the narrow spiral staircase for views over the town.
This U-shaped valley on the edge of Eger holds dozens of small wine cellars carved into the hillside, each selling glasses of Egri Bikavér (Bull's Blood) for very low prices. Tasting is the point, and a full afternoon of sampling costs less than a single bottle in a restaurant.
The Valley of the Beautiful Women (Szepasszonyvolgyi) is a horseshoe-shaped valley south of Eger lined with small wine cellars carved into the hillside. Free to walk.
