Graz is Austria’s second city with a UNESCO-listed old town that is free to wander and a lively student population that keeps prices reasonable. Climbing the Schlossberg, the forested rock at the city’s center, costs nothing and delivers the best rooftop views in town. The farmers’ markets on the central squares are some of the country’s best for cheap, fresh food. It also makes a far more affordable base than Vienna, about two and a half hours away by train.

Kunsthaus Graz
A biomorphic "Friendly Alien" building by Peter Cook and Colin Fournier, opened in 2003 for Graz's year as European Capital of Culture. The building is the statement; the interior hosts rotating contemporary art exhibitions with no permanent collection. The BIX media facade on the exterior displays light art installations at night.
