Geneva’s Jet d’Eau fountain, lakefront promenades, and UN quarter are free to see, and the city hands out a free public transport card to anyone staying overnight, which makes getting around cost nothing. The old town is free to wander, and in summer the lake doubles as a free public swimming spot. It is an expensive city, so crossing into nearby France for meals is a classic budget move, and lakeside Lausanne is a short, scenic train hop for more of the same shoreline.

Geneva's Vieille Ville (Old Town) climbs a hill above the lake, centered on the Cathedral of St Pierre (free entry, tower climb paid). The Place du Bourg-de-Four (Geneva's oldest square), the Reformation Wall (free), and the narrow streets of antique shops and cafes are all within walking distance.
The Jet d'Eau is Geneva's iconic water fountain on Lake Geneva, shooting water 140 meters into the air. Free to see from the lakeside promenades.
Parc des Bastions is a public park below the Old Town with the Reformation Wall (a 100-meter monument depicting the founders of Calvinism), giant chess boards (free to play), and the University of Geneva building. Free.
