The best of Český Krumlov is free: the castle is one of the largest complexes in Central Europe, and you can walk every one of its five courtyards, cross the famous Cloak Bridge, and take in the Baroque gardens above the town without paying a koruna. A ticket is only needed for the interior tours, the museum, and the tower. The river bend, the terracotta rooftops, and the painted castle tower make the whole UNESCO-listed old town an open-air walk, and viewpoints like Seminární Zahrada hand you the postcard shot for nothing. Note the castle gardens are open seasonally and closed over winter, so spring through autumn gets you the full free run of the grounds. Český Krumlov works as a day trip from Salzburg or as an overnight on the way to Prague, and going in May or September rather than the July to August crush means thinner crowds and cheaper beds. Cesky Krumlov Castle
Cesky Krumlov Castle is the second-largest castle complex in the Czech Republic after Prague Castle, sprawling across six connected courtyards above the town. The round tower covered in Renaissance sgraffito is the town's visual identity. The Baroque theater inside with original 17th-century machinery is one of the rarest surviving examples in Europe.
