Bergamo’s hilltop Città Alta is reached by a funicular and offers a completely walkable medieval town with stunning views down to the plain below. The Città Alta itself is free to wander, and Ryanair’s hub at Orio al Serio makes Bergamo one of the cheapest gateways into northern Italy. From here, frequent trains reach Milan, Brescia, and Verona cheaply, and Como and its lake are an easy day out. Spring and autumn dodge both the summer heat and the peak-season airfares.
