Square in Bergamo
Piazza Vecchia is the central square of Bergamo Alta, described by Le Corbusier as the most beautiful square in Italy. Free. The Contarini Fountain, the Palazzo della Ragione with its sundial, and the Campanone bell tower (small fee to climb, rings 100 times at 10pm every night) frame the space. Budget travelers sit at the square, drink a cheap coffee, and decide whether Le Corbusier was right.

Bergamo Alta (Upper Town) is the medieval hilltop city surrounded by Venetian walls, reached by funicular (cheap, or walk for free). The Piazza Vecchia with the Palazzo della Ragione and the Colleoni Chapel (facade is free to see, interior free) are the highlights.
