Basel sits at the corner where Switzerland, France, and Germany meet, which is exactly what makes it workable on a budget despite Swiss prices. In summer locals float down the Rhine for free, the old town around the red sandstone Münster is free to wander, and you can cross the border to eat far cheaper in nearby France or Germany. The little ferries that pull across the Rhine on the current cost only small change. For day trips, Freiburg in Germany and Strasbourg in France are both close, and Zurich is a short train ride. Shoulder months keep room rates lower than the summer and trade-fair peaks.

Basel's old town sits on a hill above the Rhine, a compact area of half-timbered houses, the red sandstone Minster (free entry, views from the terrace over the Rhine into France and Germany), and the painted Town Hall (Rathaus) on the Marktplatz. Free to walk.
Swimming in the Rhine is a Basel summer tradition: locals put their clothes in a waterproof "Wickelfisch" bag, enter the river upstream, and float downstream through the city center past the Minster and the old town. Free.
