City in Portugal

Aveiro

2 things to see

Aveiro is Portugal’s “Venice,” with colorful moliceiro canal boats, Art Nouveau buildings, and ovos moles (egg-yolk pastries) that cost almost nothing. Wandering the canals and the striped houses of nearby Costa Nova is free, and the Art Nouveau facades make for a no-cost walking circuit through the center. It connects easily by cheap regional train to Porto and Coimbra, so it slots neatly into a budget loop through central Portugal.
