Coimbra is a hillside university town with one of Europe’s oldest universities, a distinctive fado tradition (different from Lisbon’s), and an affordable atmosphere shaped by its student population. The old town climbs from the Mondego River up to the university, and the steep lanes between are free to wander. Coimbra sits on the main line between Lisbon and Porto, so it slots cheaply into a Portugal rail trip rather than being a detour.

Coimbra's Old Town (Alta) climbs the hillside from the river to the university, with narrow medieval streets, fado bars (Coimbra fado is different from Lisbon fado, more academic and melancholic), and the Se Velha (Old Cathedral, free to enter the nave). Free to walk.
The University of Coimbra is one of the oldest universities in the world (founded 1290), set on a hilltop above the Mondego River. The courtyard and exterior grounds are free.
