Aveiro is called the “Venice of Portugal” for its Art Nouveau buildings along a network of canals navigated by colorful moliceiro boats. Free to walk the canal paths. Boat rides are paid (cheap for shared rides). The canals, the fish market, and the Art Nouveau buildings along the Rossio canal make Aveiro one of the most photogenic small cities in Portugal. Budget travelers take the cheap train from Porto (1 hour) and walk the canals for free.
