Augsburg is one of Germany’s oldest cities, home to the Fuggerei (the world’s oldest social housing project) and a beautiful Renaissance city center at Bavarian prices. The old town, with its grand merchant houses and ornate fountains along Maximilianstrasse, is free to explore on foot. It sits close to Munich and Nuremberg, so it works well as a quieter, cheaper base on a Bavaria rail route. Visit outside the summer festival season for lower room rates.

Augsburger Rathaus
A Renaissance masterpiece with the spectacular Golden Hall, considered one of the most important secular buildings in Germany. The exterior and Rathausplatz are free; the Golden Hall charges a small fee.
Fuggerei
The world's oldest social housing complex, founded in 1521 and still operating at the original annual rent of 0.88 euros. Entry to the settlement costs a few euros and includes a museum.
