Nuremberg’s medieval old town, Imperial Castle, and famous bratwurst sausages make it a Franconian highlight. The Christmas market is one of Germany’s best, and the city’s history museums offer some of the most important World War II exhibits in the country. Walking the old town walls and castle grounds costs nothing, and a three-pack of Nuremberg bratwurst from a market stall is one of the cheapest meals in Bavaria. It pairs easily with Bamberg for more Franconian old town or with Munich for a bigger-city contrast. The Christmas market is the obvious draw, but spring and early autumn give the same walkable centre with far lower room rates.

The Documentation Centre at the Nazi Party Rally Grounds is a museum inside the unfinished Congress Hall, documenting the rise and fall of the Nazi regime and the Nuremberg Trials. Entry is paid at a modest price.
Nuremberg's walled old town is a compact medieval center with half-timbered houses, a hilltop castle (free grounds, paid interiors), and the Hauptmarkt square where the Christkindlesmarkt (Germany's most famous Christmas market) takes place. Free to walk.
