Vitosha Mountain
Vitosha Mountain rises directly above Sofia, its summit (Cherni Vrah, 2,290 meters) visible from the city center. Free to hike. The lower slopes are forested, the upper areas are alpine meadows. The golden bridges rock formations on the way up are a popular stopping point. Budget travelers take a cheap bus to the Aleko area and hike from there. Having a mountain this accessible from a European capital, at no cost, is one of Sofia’s most underrated advantages.

The only functioning mosque in Sofia, built in 1576 during the Ottoman period. Free to enter outside prayer times, it sits next to the mineral baths and the public hot spring taps where locals fill bottles with free thermal water.
