Vila Nova de Gaia Cellars

Vila Nova de Gaia is the south bank of the Douro, directly across from Porto’s Ribeira. The hillside is lined with port wine cellars offering tastings and tours. Prices vary, but several cellars offer free entry with a small tasting for a few euros. Budget travelers cross the Dom Luis I Bridge, walk the waterfront, and pick one cellar for a cheap tasting. The views back across to Porto from the Gaia side are free and arguably better than from the Porto side.
