The Shard is Western Europe’s tallest building at around 310 meters, designed by Renzo Piano and opened in 2012, with an observation deck on floors 68 to 72 called The View from The Shard. Entry to the deck is paid and sits at the expensive end of London’s viewpoints, so budget travellers should check the current ticket price first. The smart comparison is the free Sky Garden view across the Thames, which is lower but costs nothing beyond a booked timed slot. The Shard’s exterior, visible from across London and especially from Tower Bridge and the streets around Borough Market, is free to photograph. Many say it has reshaped the London skyline more than any structure since St Paul’s Cathedral, and looking up at it from London Bridge station costs nothing at all.
