Perugia Old Town
Perugia is the hilltop capital of Umbria, a university city with Etruscan walls, a Gothic cathedral, and the Corso Vannucci (the main street where the evening passeggiata happens). Free to walk.
Fortress in Perugia
The Rocca Paolina is a 16th-century papal fortress built by demolishing an entire medieval neighborhood. When Perugia rebelled, the neighborhood was buried inside the fortress. Today, escalators take visitors through the underground medieval streets on the way from the lower city to the historic center. Free. Budget travelers ride the escalators through the buried streets and emerge at the top of the hill having traveled through a neighborhood that was entombed as punishment.
