Rocca Paolina
The Rocca Paolina is a 16th-century papal fortress built by demolishing an entire medieval neighborhood. When Perugia rebelled, the neighborhood was buried inside the fortress.

Perugia is the hilltop capital of Umbria, a university city with Etruscan walls, a Gothic cathedral, and the Corso Vannucci (the main street where the evening passeggiata happens). Free to walk. The Fontana Maggiore (a 13th-century fountain in the main square, free) and the National Gallery of Umbria (paid, houses Perugino and Pinturicchio) are the highlights. Budget travelers arrive by cheap bus from Rome or Florence, walk the hilltop center, eat Umbrian food at university-town prices, and see the city where Perugino taught Raphael.
