Street in Nuremberg

Nuremberg Old Town

Nuremberg’s walled old town is a compact medieval center with half-timbered houses, a hilltop castle (free grounds, paid interiors), and the Hauptmarkt square where the Christkindlesmarkt (Germany’s most famous Christmas market) takes place. Free to walk. The Albrecht Durer House (paid, modest), the Handwerkerhof artisan courtyard, and the Bratwurst alleys are inside the walls. Budget travelers take the cheap regional train from Munich (1 hour), walk the old town, eat Nuremberg sausages from a market stall, and see the most atmospheric medieval city in Bavaria.
