Murano is the glass-making island in the Venetian lagoon, 10 minutes by vaporetto from Venice. Free to walk. Glass factories offer free demonstrations (they hope you buy something). The Museo del Vetro (Glass Museum) is paid at a modest price. The main canal lined with colorful houses and glass showrooms is the main attraction. Budget travelers take the vaporetto (standard transit ticket), watch a free glass-blowing demonstration, browse the showrooms, and return to Venice having seen a craft tradition that has been on this island since 1291.

Basilica dei Frari
The Frari in Venice is a Gothic brick basilica built by Franciscan friars beginning in 1338, its construction spanning over a century and producing one of the largest churches in Venice. Venice's largest sestiere stretches from the tourist crush near San Marco into quiet residential neighborhoods. Free to wander, the eastern end around Via Garibaldi feels like a different city entirely, with local bars, laundry lines, and almost no visitors.
