The Markthal is a horseshoe-shaped residential building arching over a covered food market, with a ceiling mural of oversized fruit and flowers by Arno Coenen. Free to enter. The market stalls sell Dutch and international food at mid-range prices. The architecture is the draw: the building itself is one of the most striking in the Netherlands. Budget travelers enter from the Blaak metro, look up at the ceiling, browse the stalls, and photograph one of the most photogenic market buildings in Europe.
