Street in Berat

Mangalem Quarter

Mangalem is the Ottoman quarter on the hillside below Berat Castle, a UNESCO-listed neighborhood of white houses with large windows stacked up the slope. Free to walk. The houses give Berat its nickname “City of a Thousand Windows.” The view from across the Osum River (from the Gorica quarter) of the white houses climbing toward the castle is one of the most iconic images in Albania. Budget travelers cross the bridge, photograph the facade, and walk the cobbled streets.
