Castle in Berat

Berat Castle

Berat Castle is a massive hilltop fortress above the old town, still inhabited by a living community within its walls. Free to enter. The Byzantine churches, Ottoman mosques, and residential houses inside the castle walls form a functioning neighborhood, not a museum. The Onufri Museum (small fee) inside one of the churches holds remarkable Byzantine icons. Budget travelers walk up through the castle gate and explore a fortress that people have been living in continuously for over 2,400 years.
