Lucca’s Renaissance city walls are unique in Italy: they were never breached in battle and have been converted into a 4.2-kilometer tree-lined promenade that circles the entire old town. Free to walk or cycle. The walls are wide enough for two lanes of traffic (they were designed for cannon placement) and are now the city’s main park. Budget travelers rent a cheap bike and ride the full circuit of the walls, looking down into the old town on one side and out to the Tuscan hills on the other.
