The Schmittenhoehe rises to 2,000 meters directly behind Zell am See, and the cable car from the town center gets you to the top in under 20 minutes. The summit panorama circles the full Hohe Tauern range, with the Grossglockner, Austria's highest peak at 3,798 meters, visible to the south and the Kitzsteinhorn glacier above Kaprun to the southwest.
A compact medieval town center wedged between lake and mountain, with a Romanesque tower and car-free pedestrian streets. Free to explore and surprisingly charming beyond its reputation as a ski resort base.
