Zell am See combines a sparkling Alpine lake with mountain scenery, and the best of it costs nothing. The lakeside promenade is free to walk, the Zeller See is open for swimming from June, and the pedestrianized old town on its small peninsula is pleasant to wander without spending a cent. Regional trains from Salzburg are affordable and take around 80 minutes. The shoulder seasons in late spring and autumn are the quiet, cheaper windows, with hiking up the Schmittenhoehe and easy day trips to nearby Kaprun and Saalbach-Hinterglemm.

Schmittenhöhe
The Schmittenhoehe rises to 2,000 meters directly behind Zell am See, and the cable car from the town center gets you to the top in under 20 minutes. The summit panorama circles the full Hohe Tauern range, with the Grossglockner, Austria's highest peak at 3,798 meters, visible to the south and the Kitzsteinhorn glacier above Kaprun to the southwest.
Zell am See Old Town
A compact medieval town center wedged between lake and mountain, with a Romanesque tower and car-free pedestrian streets. Free to explore and surprisingly charming beyond its reputation as a ski resort base.
