Square in Haarlem
Haarlem’s Grote Markt is a large central square dominated by the Grote Kerk (Great Church), a Gothic church where both Handel and Mozart played the Christian Muller organ. Free to see from outside (church entry is paid, modest). The square hosts a market on Saturdays. Budget travelers take the cheap train from Amsterdam (15 minutes) and find a city with Amsterdam’s canal charm at half the tourist density and lower prices.

The Frans Hals Museum is housed in a 17th-century almshouse, displaying the paintings of Frans Hals (the Dutch Golden Age master of portraiture who influenced Manet and the Impressionists) in the city where he worked. Entry is paid at a modest price.
