Haarlem is a handsome Dutch city just a quick train ride from Amsterdam, with lower prices than its famous neighbor and most of the appeal free. The grand market square and the Grote Markt around the Grote Kerk cost nothing to enjoy, and the hidden almshouse courtyards (hofjes) tucked through the old town are free to step into and beautifully quiet. It makes a cheaper base for visiting Amsterdam, or an easy day trip paired with Utrecht or Rotterdam. Spring and autumn are calmer and better value than the summer crush.

The Frans Hals Museum is housed in a 17th-century almshouse, displaying the paintings of Frans Hals (the Dutch Golden Age master of portraiture who influenced Manet and the Impressionists) in the city where he worked. Entry is paid at a modest price.
Haarlem's Grote Markt is a large central square dominated by the Grote Kerk (Great Church), a Gothic church where both Handel and Mozart played the Christian Muller organ. Free to see from outside (church entry is paid, modest).
