Martini Tower
The 97-metre Martinitoren has been Groningen's landmark since the 15th century, and climbing the tower costs just a few euros for views over the entire province. The attached Martinikerk at the base has medieval frescoes.

A striking postmodern building sitting on an island in the main canal, designed by Alessandro Mendini with pavilions by Coop Himmelblau and Philippe Starck. Worth seeing from outside for free, with reasonably priced admission for the art and design collections inside.
