Groningen is a vibrant university city in the north of the Netherlands with the youngest population in the country, which keeps nightlife and food cheap and the canal-ringed center lively. The old town and its canals are free to wander on foot or by rented bike, the standard Dutch way to get around. Few tourists make it this far north, so prices stay well below Amsterdam, and it makes a good budget base or stopover when crossing between the Randstad and northern Germany. Spring and early autumn are pleasant and quieter than summer.

A striking postmodern building sitting on an island in the main canal, designed by Alessandro Mendini with pavilions by Coop Himmelblau and Philippe Starck. Worth seeing from outside for free, with reasonably priced admission for the art and design collections inside.
The 97-metre Martinitoren has been Groningen's landmark since the 15th century, and climbing the tower costs just a few euros for views over the entire province. The attached Martinikerk at the base has medieval frescoes.
A long English-landscape park stretching along the old city moat, free and popular with students and locals year-round. The perfect budget-friendly lunch spot if you bring your own food from the nearby market.
