The Grand Canal is Venice’s main waterway, a 3.8-kilometer reverse-S curve lined with palaces, churches, and gondola stations. Walking alongside it is free (where paths exist). The cheapest way to “cruise” the canal is the Line 1 vaporetto (public water bus) with a standard transit ticket. Budget travelers ride Line 1 from Piazzale Roma to San Marco and get a palace-by-palace tour for the price of a bus ticket.
