The Golden Roof (Goldenes Dachl) is a 15th-century alcove balcony in the old town covered with 2,657 gilded copper tiles, built for Emperor Maximilian I to watch events in the square below. Free to see from the street. The small museum behind it is paid. The Altstadt (old town) around it is a colorful street of medieval and Baroque buildings with the Nordkette mountains rising directly behind. Budget travelers photograph the roof, walk the Altstadt, and look up at the Alps from the city center.

Zaha Hadid designed this ski jump tower on the Bergisel hill south of Innsbruck for EUR 15 million, and the cafe at the top is one of the best free-entry viewpoints in any Austrian city. The Four Hills Tournament (Vierschanzentournee) draws 28,000 spectators to the stadium below on New Year's Day and millions of TV viewers across Europe.
