Freiburg Bachle

The Bachle are small channels of water running through the gutters of Freiburg’s old town streets, a medieval water system unique to the city. Free. The narrow waterways are charming and children splash in them in summer. Local legend says that anyone who accidentally steps in a Bachle will marry a Freiburger. Budget travelers walk through the old town, try not to step in a Bachle, and enjoy the most distinctive free feature of any German city.
