The Venetian Quarter (Topanas) is the old neighborhood behind the harbor, a maze of narrow alleys, Ottoman and Venetian buildings, leather shops, and small restaurants. Free to wander. The Municipal Market (Agora) at the edge of the quarter is a cross-shaped covered market selling Cretan cheese, olives, herbs, and honey. Budget travelers get lost in the lanes, eat at a cheap souvlaki shop, and stock up at the market.
