Chania’s Venetian harbor is one of the most beautiful in the Mediterranean and free to walk around, with the old town’s tangle of lanes costing nothing to explore. The covered market is the budget traveler’s friend for cheap local produce, cheese, and snacks, and Cretan tavernas away from the waterfront serve generous plates at fair prices. Spring and autumn bring warm water, lower room rates, and far thinner crowds than peak summer. Along the north coast it links easily to Rethymno and Heraklion for more of Crete on a budget.
