Brno Old Town

Brno is the Czech Republic’s second city, a university town with cheap beer, modernist architecture, and the Spilberk Castle (free grounds, museum paid) on the hilltop. Free to walk. The Namesti Svobody (Freedom Square), the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul, and the Cabbage Market (Zelny trh, a daily vegetable market operating since the 13th century) are the old town highlights. Budget travelers take the cheap bus from Prague (2.5 hours) and discover that Brno has Prague’s atmosphere at half the prices and without the crowds.
